Civilization

Last night I sat on the steps of the United States Capitol and enjoyed my tax dollars at work in the form of the U. S. Army Band “Pershing’s Own.” It turns out that this elite army band is actually a collection of nine ensembles, including string players and vocalists, who combine in a variety of ways to perform thousands of concerts a year. Last night, as part of their free outdoor concert series on the National Mall, a small orchestra and some mighty fine singers performed a lively, one-hour program of favorite orchestral overtures and opera arias. For free! Opera! In uniform!

Pious Petunia Braves the Wedding Season

Today, guest blogger and advice columnist Pious Petunia offers hard-earned wisdom for brides, grooms, friends, and other victims of the summer wedding frenzy.

Dear Miss Petunia: My girlfriend and I have talked about getting married, and I’m ready to propose to her. But I don’t know how to do it! Her friend’s husband proposed by organizing a flash mob which performed a dance number to her favorite song, and then he parachuted in with the ring attached to the collar of an adorable Pomeranian puppy. How am I supposed to compete with that?

An Ode to Cable

Oh cable, I could not part with you!

I came close, though. You know how it works: you negotiate a one-year deal, and then when the special rate eventually expires, some even-more-obscene amount quietly drains from your bank account. That’s your cue to get on the phone with the customer service representative at Evil Empire, Inc.

“You knew this was going to happen. You agreed to it,” remarked the customer service dude the other day when my husband finally got through the phone tree and the hold system.

Let It Go, Baby: Frozen and Female Power

At this point, the realization hit me: This is not about sisters. Elsa is up on that mountain, free at last from duties and secrets, and she is finally letting her powers rip, creating a magnificent ice palace, an architectural wonder flourishing right out of her fingertips. Unlike with most witchy villainess figures, Elsa’s power is depicted as only obliquely sexual. What’s emphasized in this scene and throughout is her creativity and her ability to alter the world around her. So I’m thinking, Hunh. I bet this story is about female power.

Little Obsessions

I have endured some condescending eyerolling this week, aimed my way because I showed moderate interest in the birth of the royal baby. The two men with whom I live (one husband, one teenage son) took the line “Babies are born every day. Big deal.” I have not bothered to argue. One cannot make certain people understand about certain things.

Hypermodernity Got Ya Down? Put a Bonnet On It!

I have never read an Amish romance novel. I tried once—not very hard—and couldn’t do it, couldn’t even get past page three. However, I did just now manage to read with great delight, cover to cover, Valerie Weaver-Zurcher’s new book, The Thrill of the Chaste: The Allure of Amish Romance Novels. Unable to resist that delicious title, I dove into this fascinating cultural study of the Amish romance phenomenon, because, like anyone who follows the publishing industry, I want to know: why are readers so crazy about Amish romance?

Quintessence of Dust

Last night, thanks to the cleverness and curiosity of internet geeks, my husband and I were able to listen for about three hours to Boston police scanners—live-streamed over the internet—during the operation that captured the Boston bombing suspect. We knew, before it was broadcast on the TV news shows, that he was hiding in a boat parked in a driveway on Franklin Street. I can tell you that the words “the suspect is in custody” were announced on the police scanner at 8:42 p.m. EST.

Doomed To Be a Taker

I really must apologize to the whole of society, since evidently I am a “taker.” I am a leech, a parasite, a moocher. This was certainly not my intention, but I missed some sort of memo and now I find myself in a category of people responsible for moral decay and the downfall of American greatness. Honest, I had no idea. I’m sorry.

Star of Wonder

The result of this for Chesterton was to see the whole world as astonishing, exactly because it might have been otherwise. Trees might have grown “tigers by the tail” instead of leaves. Eventually he gets to the idea that Someone made these choices about the world. But here he simply points out that fantasy stories remind us of the wondrous surprise of the world as it is. Everything is magic; everything is miracle.
